Oughterard, Co. Galway · County Galway
Three generations of artisan butchery in the heart of Connemara — award-winning air-dried meats and grass-fed Connemara lamb since 1971.
Eamonn McGeough established his butcher shop in Oughterard in 1971, on the edge of Connemara where the bogland meets Lough Corrib. What started as a traditional family butcher has evolved, under the third generation led by Justin McGeough, into one of Ireland's most distinctive artisan meat producers.
The McGeoughs are best known for their air-dried and smoked meat range — a range of cured and preserved products developed from the natural abundance of Connemara lamb and beef, produced using traditional techniques refined over three generations. Their products have won awards across Irish and international artisan food competitions and have been featured by leading Irish food writers and Michelin-recommended restaurants.
Connemara lamb carries a distinct flavour tied to the terrain — mountainside grazing on heather, wild herbs, and coastal grasses that the animal encounters on open bogland gives the meat a depth unavailable from lowland-raised stock. The McGeoughs have spent three generations building relationships with local Connemara farmers to source lamb and beef that reflects the landscape.
Fresh meat (beef, pork, lamb, poultry) forms the shop's core, but the McGeoughs' reputation rests on their value-added range: Connemara air-dried beef, smoked lamb, sausages made from local pork, and their acclaimed BBQ and meat platters. They also produce Beef Wellington and a premium catering range. The online shop carries their cured and smoked products nationwide.
The shop is at 2 Camp Street, Oughterard — a short drive from Galway city on the N59 toward Clifden. Online ordering is available through their website for the cured and smoked range, with delivery across Ireland.
