Keep beef and lamb label checks separate in Kerry
Beef and sheep meat have related but distinct origin-labelling rules. Read the label for the species and product in front of you, then assess any voluntary grass-fed statement separately.
For fresh or frozen beef
FSAI lists a reference code, slaughter country and approval number, cutting country and approval number, and origin information for beef. “Origin: Ireland” has a defined meaning where birth, rearing and slaughter occurred in Ireland. Otherwise the relevant countries are stated separately.
For fresh, chilled or frozen sheep meat
FSAI's origin guidance explains the required “reared in” and “slaughtered in” information and batch code. “Origin” may be used only where the applicable conditions for birth, rearing and slaughter in one country are met. Product type and preparation can affect the applicable wording, so use the current official page.
For a grass-fed statement
Origin labelling does not automatically verify diet. Ask what criteria define grass-fed, who verifies them, what batch the evidence covers and whether a scheme logo is being used under current rules. Do not transfer a beef standard to lamb or a general farm statement to a particular pack.
Make a simple record
- Species and product type.
- Batch or reference code.
- Origin, rearing, slaughter and cutting wording as applicable.
- Exact voluntary claim and named standard.
- Date, seller and a photograph of the full label or display.
